Situated in Québec's rolling Eastern Townships, North Hatley has long long been a holiday destination. Settled from the late eighteenth century by a mixture of emigrants from the Bristish Isles as well as Loyalists fleeing the newly established Uniter States of America. The new arrivals brought with them the place names of their former homes as well as a distinctive architecture, mush of which remains today.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, a railway was built connecting the United States east coast at Barton with Québec City. This was the era of train travel and of vacation resorts. One line passed along the eastern shore of Lake Massawippi with a stop at North Hatley. It was not long before the natural beauty of the area made North Hatley itself a vacation destination.

Hotels and houses sprang up to fill the demand for summer holiday makers and new residents. One hotel, the 'Glen Villa' boasted 365 rooms and a casino. Steamers and pleasure craft plied the pristine waters of the lake. Massawippi Lodge itself was a stop for the steamer which carried the mail.
Returning visitors from the southern United States built many of the fine homes along the lake including Massawippi Lodge, built for a Baltimore cotton merchant's family. The style of the period was the shingle style introduced and developed on Long Island by among others, Stanford White. Many of the North Hatley examples are the creations of famous east coast architects.

The lake is popular with fishermen and is stocked yearly with grey trout. Other species include bass, perch and pike. It is not uncommon for sturgeon or even land-locked salmon to be netted. Complete outfitting as well as guides are available in North Hatley.
